Happy Mardi Gras!

If all goes according to plan, this will be the last Mardi Gras I ever spend outside of New Orleans.

I am back in Boston. Over the last week i have only checked LJ very spottily, so if you wrote about anything that you want to make sure i don't miss, please link to it here (or send me an email).

I learned a couple of things from this trip: the first being that i don't have the stamina for Mardi Gras anymore and need to get in better shape if i want to do this again next year. The second was a realization after i noticed that i did not see anyone i knew in New Orleans before the storm during this trip at all, except our graceful hostess [livejournal.com profile] kellcrow7, and all too briefly [livejournal.com profile] alobar, and i realized that i don't really feel rooted anywhere. My sweeties are here, but that's the only way in which i feel connected to this area at all. New Orleans would be like basically starting anew if i moved there; so many of the people i loved there are elsewhere now. Austin... well i grew up there and know quite a few amazing people there, but the city has changed a LOT since i lived there 19 years ago and that, too, would in many ways be like starting in a new city if i were to live there.

If all goes according to plan, by this time tomorrow i should be in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, barrelling down the turnpike.

[profile] lady_babalon, A., and i are renting a car and driving to New Orleans, starting tomorrow morning.  We'll be there for Mardi Gras and a couple days after, heading back on the following weekend.

If anyone in NOLA wants to try to meet up with me -- no guarantees, but email me for my cell # and we'll see what might be arranged.

I am in New Orleans.

[livejournal.com profile] lady_babalon and A. and i arrived Saturday afternoon, and it's been a whirlwind of parades, walking, and fantastic food since then. There are a few friends i hope to catch up with (including some of you) between now and Thursday.

Since we haven't been through any of the areas that received the worst of the devastation, it's actually been slow to dawn on me how deep the devastation runs. On our first ride from the airport, we saw some fences and trees still blown down, tarps on roofs, piles of dead trees and torn out sheetrock, and so on, but not, at first, anything worse than what i've seen in other cities where there had recently been a hurricane. It was a whole day before we learned how to see the waterline marks on all the buildings around us... and they are in evidence on virtually every building, except those which have been recently painted. Riding back home in a taxi last night we passed through one of the residential areas between Claiborne and City Park Avenue... this area is literally a ghost town, with maybe one illuminated house per every three or four blocks. So many, too many, of the businesses are still closed, even in the relatively well-populated parts of the city.

There is much good cheer on display, enough that Mardi Gras feels more or less like the Mardi Gras i came to know in my time here. Many of the closed businesses have signs saying they will be open again soon. There is little reason to doubt that New Orleans will go on.

While Carnival means "Farewell to the Flesh," I doubt I will be saying farewell to flesh. Rather, I expect the next few days to be more like, "Hello, flesh! I'm Sabrina. Nice to make your acquaintance."

Rain chances have increased for tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday. Bleah.

Well, unless I dial in, I will be unavailable online until next Thursday. See you then, kiddos.

It's funny, but this year I don't feel Mardi Gras brewing in the air the way I usually do. Usually by this time, less than three weeks away from Mardi Gras day, I can feel a slight buzzing in my muladhara. I had to remind myself yesterday that the Krewe du Vieux parade is this Saturday. (See the list of sub-krewes for a hint of what I mean.)

This is one of my favorite parades. I might actually put some effort into trying to secure a balcony seat somewhere so I can get a few snapshots of the more irreverent or bawdy sights. This is the most pagan of the parades, with many displays incorporating blatant phallic or other bodily themes, adult humor, and ruthless political satire.

Other parades I'm looking forward to include Muses, Hermes (always a rather serious and elaborate dedication to one Greek deity or another, practically an act of worship), Tucks (much political funniness), and Zulu.

I'm even closer to the parade route now (5 blocks) than I was last year.

Edit. [livejournal.com profile] ubiquity, maybe you'll get to catch a glimpse of Elijah Wood before I have to whisk you to the airport Sunday night. That might be pushing our luck, though... we'll see.

Sometimes it seems like ideas just come through you, instead of to you.

Was thinking about [livejournal.com profile] alobar's description of the game of Destiny, and his lament that there was not a large enough group of familiar people in New Orleans to have a viable game. I thought, "Well, we'll just have to bring them *back* here, then," and the following idea was born. Of course, it is now way beyond the game of Destiny, but I'm on a roll now.

Suppose a conclave were to be held, perhaps under the auspices of [livejournal.com profile] lady_babalon's Raven Clan. Suppose certain former (and future?) residents of New Orleans who now live in Massachusetts and Texas, and others, could be enticed to come here for an extended weekend.

Sketchier parts of the idea started to flesh themselves out while I was in the shower this morning. A possible location might be the clothing-optional campground in Slidell where the Wyldfyre festivals were held. As I understand it the owner of the place is pagan-friendly, though I'm not so sure about the management. (I know that three or four of you were directly involved with this -- do any of you care to speak on whether this is a viable option? I'm not about to call LC and ask.)

Since many of the friends who came to mind have an interest in BDSM it seems logical to acknowledge that in some way.

If we set it around Mabon, the preceeding weekend (Sept. 19-21) seems like a reasonable time to hold a campout in New Orleans. Another thought is Samhain, but I think the nights in Slidell are actually cool enough in late October to cause some of us to have hesitations about camping out then.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I would prefer to keep this as informal as possible. Nothing organized whatsoever -- perhaps a short itinerary of events -- but more or less just an agreed upon place and time.
