Why do I even bother to look in [livejournal.com profile] christianity anymore? Half of what I see there literally makes me sick.

Edit. What disturbs me this morning in particular are (a) ignorant comments about homosexuality which never fails to upset me, and (b) willful ignorance regarding anti-Semitism.

For example, it's being discussed that Gibson has taken a scene out of his movie that shows a Jew lamenting that Jesus' blood will be on their heads forever. Comments such as, "But that's in the Bible, so it's historically true and COULDN'T POSSIBLY be anti-Semitic" are what has riled me.

If you say the bible is meaningful or relevant, my comment is directed at you. Anyone who reads the bible to children is (IMO) doing the children a great harm. The book is a primative book of superstitious mythology which is certainly not suitable for 90% of the people who call themselves Christian. If you want to re-write the book top to bottom to keep the gems while throwing out the trash -- go for it. But the bible as it stands does far more spiritual harm than good.

Ok. But, given your complete misunderstanding of basic doctrines like original sin and scriptural interpretation, why should you suppose your personal opinion on Christianity is pertinent?

Any, given your characterization of various cultural groups as "fucked-up", why should you suppose your personal opinion on spiritual gems versus trash is pertinent?

Actually I have to say that while my judgment is not quite as harsh as [livejournal.com profile] alobar towards Christianity I agree with the gist of what he is saying. The Bible shouldn't be read to children and was probably never meant to be.

And, insofar as [livejournal.com profile] alobar is someone who lives in a nation populated largely by people who call themselves Christian and who like to try to inflict policies on everyone based on their understanding of Christian teaching -- which is beginning to vary quite widely from those who actually understand what it is that scripture means and doesn't mean -- I'd say that [livejournal.com profile] alobar's opinion is as relevant or pertinent as anyone's.

I'll join in as loudly against the hypocrisy of contemporary popular Christianity, and twice as loudly against interventionist government. On neither case does this mandate the ideological splitting of the world into Christian and not-Christian, and the offering of fervent antagonism from one to the other - which is, indeed, the very problem in the first place.

'Christians are fucked-up and it's a sin to endorse Christianity' and remarks of that sort are no more palpable than the same said of pagans, etc.
