Why do I even bother to look in [livejournal.com profile] christianity anymore? Half of what I see there literally makes me sick.

Edit. What disturbs me this morning in particular are (a) ignorant comments about homosexuality which never fails to upset me, and (b) willful ignorance regarding anti-Semitism.

For example, it's being discussed that Gibson has taken a scene out of his movie that shows a Jew lamenting that Jesus' blood will be on their heads forever. Comments such as, "But that's in the Bible, so it's historically true and COULDN'T POSSIBLY be anti-Semitic" are what has riled me.

What makes you sick about what's in [livejournal.com profile] christianity?

I don't go there: don't like to get my dander up so much, I guess.

And people wonder why I refuse to go to any sort of church, even though technically the denomination my parents now attend has a kind of "don't ask, don't tell" policy in place for it's gay members. Gosh can ya FEEL the LOVE of Christ in that room? Nevermind that Christians in the modern epoch are doing any number of things that are claimed as an abomination in the Old Testament, or that Christ came to tell everybody that the old codes weren't all that anymore. Or that Paul had major unresolved personal issues on the subject and that most modern somewhat self aware Christians tend to dismiss most of the Pauline texts as political rather than spiritual...

My personal favorite was the woman who claimed she had an "intimate knowledge of the issue (homosexuality) so nobody start calling me a bigamist."

(laughs out loud)
Oh my. That's just lovely. When 8th graders (or adults with that level of edu-ma-cation) attack!

Every once in a while there's some good discussion. But for the most part, it's just too upsetting for me.

I only have ONE prejudice: Conta-Protestantism!

I think the greatest of the Protestant poets in the English literary tradition is Milton. The Prots who are literary and well-educated salivate over him, and claim he's a greater poet than Dante (which he clearly is NOT), but when you have one of these "born-againers" in a Milton course you will notice that they NEVER bring up the fact that Milton wouldn' darken the doorstep of a "Christian" church during the whole second half of his life. And ALL of his angle on "Christian" religiosity seems to be that one should sit alone with one's Bible, and try to figure it out for oneself. Of course, considering the amount of bile and hatred these people are spewing all the time, maybe sitting alone quietly with their Bibles might actually CONCENTRATE the venom.

Apparently there are a few people out there who chose to experiment with it, and chose to conclude that it wasn't for them.

That gives them the right to declare that it must be a choice for everyone.

Never mind the flaws in inductive "reasoning" involved.

a) there's little you can do about that but move on with your life.

b) I think that it's well-established that there's no anti-Semitic content in the New Testament, just ignorant interpretation of the New Testament.

I would call that often-asserted, but in my mind far from well established.

Try [livejournal.com profile] politicsforum; or I may enjoy discussing those issues. I haven't found any of the religous/political ideology-specific communities to be particularly amenable to nonpartisan discussion.

John's fictions

From: [identity profile] publius-aelius.livejournal.com
The Passion narrative in the Gospel of John is RAW anti-Semitism--especially when you consider all of the archaelogical, linguistic and historical evidence that most of it is PURE FABRICATION--meant to exculpate Pilate and the Roman administrators and damn the "Jews." (And, yes, I know of the evidence that its provenance may be closer to the time of Jesus than the other Evangels; that doesn't prevent it from being largely a political ploy. The other Gospels make MORE SENSE, and are truer to the norms of Roman governance of conquered peoples.)

I left the community for those reasons, among others. It's a crying shame how ignorant so many Christians are. And I say that as one who is aware of my own ignorance, but I'm constantly trying to learn and become more aware and more educated.

The attitude displayed by most evangelical/fundamentalist Christians makes me wish we had different "labels" -- one to denote that type of ignorant, intolerant, oppressive "Christianity" and one that references people who really are trying to follow Christ.

He just wrote that there is "archaelogical, linguistic and historical evidence" to back them up. That makes them far from BASELESS.

I can't seem to get through a full page of those entires without getting pissed off by something. There doesn't seem to be much diversity of thought in there. And no one seems willing to discuss social justice issues as applied to the faith, which never fails to baffle and disturb me.

How can YOU, of all people say this, Scott, when the Gospel of John is the most Hellenic--the least Judaic--in philosophic tone? When it provides the clearest evidence of what you seem to be talking about, always--a betrayal, by the early Church, of the Hebraic elements of Christianity? It's the Gospel that BEGINS the "paganizing" of Christ--the turning of Him into a "dying god"--rather than the legitimate consummation of the teachings and prophecies of the Jews? Just how much critical exegitical scholarship have you engaged in?

Is the 'paganizing' of Christianity anti-Semitic?

Re: John's fictions

The paganizing of Christianity took place in a context of growing animosity between Christians and Jews. It is not inherently anti-Semitic, but there is a correlation.
