It's an old joke in the realm of comparative religion. Only one, so the popular wisdom goes, can possibly be right, and everyone else is wrong. But what if it's some obscure tribe in South America? Or, even worse, the Hare Krishnas?

George Harrison said in an interview that one of the things that attracted him to the Hare Krishnas was the idea that when we're in heaven with Krishna, we interact personally with him in whatever way suits us most. He might be a parent, or mentor, or lover, or child.

I haven't researched the issue and so I don't know how accurate this is. Or if once we pick a single form, that we're stuck with that for eternity. But it sounds like the fun basis of a poll. I've taken a few liberties. So here goes:

[Poll #180339]

Edit: So far, only females have picked "lover." Is this because you are imagining a male avatar? Suppose the avatar could be female, too. Or maybe even a "mystif" like Pie'oh'Pah in Clive Barker's Imagica.

The animal companion form I'd want the Divine to take is, of course, a bird. But then I already think the Holy Spirit is a psittacine. And parrot nature is kind of like Buddha nature. :-D

Which bird is Loki, then? ;->

Hm... perhaps one of the smaller corvids, since the raven already belongs to Odin? Or maybe the right answer is--any one he wants to be. *g*

I mainly meant, I was wondering if the men were imagining a male avatar.

Oh! Heh. Now I understand why you asked. (:

I, for one, wasn't.

I simply imagined who I would prefer spending eternity with.

And since I perfer to have lovers who are also really good friends... who else would be better to spend eternity with?

Namaste,
RX

I only want sex with a god when I am actualized as a god as well. Since I am not there yet, I prefer to sexually couple with beings on my own level. I just don't like being outclassed in a relationship. My ego gets grumpy.

Ooooh, Pie-o-pah! Yummy...

A lover wouldn't necesarily have to be male. I am bi, myself.

Maybe despite all the hype about women being delicate and non-sexual and men being the sexual agressor, women are actually more interested in sex than men? Or perhaps lover means something different to women in general...

I'm resisting the urge to reply:

"Thank you, I've never had any complaints..."

But that would be perceived as blasphemous...

and we BOTH know I'm NEVER blasphemous.. :P

Or maybe (prepares to duck and run) it says more about the women attracted to my journal in particular?

Or perhaps lover means something different to women in general...

That's a good thought, too.

I heard a story about Shiva that said one time he changed himself into a female for the sake of something a bit different with his wife...

I think I remember that as well. You may be thinking, though, of the story of the asura who disguised himself as Shakti with the goal of seducing Shiva while Shakti was away and slaying him at a moment of vulnerability.

Are you familiar with Mohini, the female avatar of Vishnu?

Date: 2003-09-15 07:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] azaz-al.livejournal.com
No, the story is something like - Shiva transformed himself into a woman to please his wife. Because he was Shiva, everything around him within a certain radius was also changed into female form, and then some god or monk wandered into the area of Shiva's influence and got turned into a woman and was really unhappy about it or something...

I'm not familiar with Mohini.

Hmm, I don't recall ever reading that story. Very interesting.

I made a page about Mohini quite a while back -- goodness, this goes back to the days when I was still calling myself Callisto Radiant. This page could use some updating.

Ah, found a link to an interesting paper. The story I was referring to is on page three, but the entire document is interesting.

and i picked lover, and was not thinking of a male avatar.

i think that having an all powerful force would make a relationship much wasier, as a divine being, one would assume, would have an even easier time communicating.

That may be an unfair assumption to make, i dunno.

Besides, it'd be neat to have a bunch of nephilim-like tykes running around. Or perhaps half-titans is more apropo (since angels are not quite gods, unless you ahve a very broad interpretation of mythological lore).

I had to click 'animal companion' (and about 3 others) as I suspected you put that in there for me :) But it sounds like I'd expect Beloved to be my personal pet, whereas I'm actually thinking of something like a giant canine version of Aslan. The 'personal pet' slot is reserved for Habiz, who if I'm really lucky will be big enough to ride in the afterlife. And be able to fly :)
