God Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder

NEW HAVEN, CT -- In a diagnosis that helps explain the confusing and contradictory aspects of the cosmos that have baffled philosophers, theologians, and other students of the human condition for millennia, God, creator of the universe and longtime deity to billions of followers, was found Monday to suffer from bipolar disorder.

Rev. Dr. J. Henry Jurgens, a practicing psychiatrist and doctor of divinity at Yale University Divinity School, announced the historic diagnosis at a press conference.

"I always knew there had to be some explanation," Jurgens said. "And, after several years of patient research and long sessions with God Almighty through the intercessionary medium of prayer, I was able to pinpoint the specific nature of His problem."

... Evidence of God's manic-depression can be found throughout the Universe, from the white-hot explosiveness of quasars to the cold, lifeless vacuum of space. However, theologians note, humanity's exposure to God's affliction comes primarily through His confusing propensity to alternately reward and punish His creations with little rhyme or reason.

"Last week, I lost my dear husband Walter to the flood," said housewife and devout churchgoer Elaine Froman of Davenport, IA. "I asked myself, 'Why? Why would God do something like this, especially when He had just helped Walter overcome a long battle with colon cancer, and we were so happy that we finally had a chance to start our lives anew?'"

A heads-up from [livejournal.com profile] chuckdarwin:

Coming back soon to a theater near you -- a controversial film about a Jewish guy from Nazareth who is worshiped as the Messiah and crucified by the Romans.

No, it's not Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." It's Monty Python's "Life of Brian."

Inspired by the runaway success -- and public furor -- over Gibson's portrayal of the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus, the creators behind the 1979 biblical satire about an anti-Roman activist who spends his life being mistaken for a prophet are planning a 25th anniversary re-release next month.

Apparently, a county in Oregon is taking a different approach to ensure parity of marital rights for straight and gay couples -- they are refusing to issue marriage licences to anybody.

"It may seem odd," Benton County Commissioner Linda Modrell told Reuters in a telephone interview, but "we need to treat everyone in our county equally."

[Poll #267913]

Edit. Here is what I endorse at this point. Churches should remain free to accept or deny any applications for marriage or holy union. The government should replace legal marriage with a new form of domestic union that would allow two or more adults (whether or not they are in a romantic or sexual relationship) to define themselves as a legal unit for purposes of finance, taxation, healthcare decisions, and so on.

Legal marriage, as it is now, puts the government in your bedroom, where it should not be.

The act of sex is equivalent to spitting the eye of fate.

It is life, defying its death sentence. It is celebration in the face of eventual loss and sorrow. It is closeness and intimacy in spite of the fear and aloofness bred into us by callousness.

This is why sex is sacred, and why it is such an important battlefield with the archons. The archons must control sex to retain their control; this is how they play ape politics with us. Archontic control of sex is the equivalent of "collaring" the entire society.
