I found out last night that Dee has parlayed some of her resources towards buying me a djembe! I'm thrilled about this, naturally. My last drum, a doumbek, met with... an unfortunate end. Though I will miss the ceramic "feel" of the doumbek sound, the djimbe has a good sound too. I like the variety of sounds that both drums produce, they suit my rhythmic style and I can lose myself very easily while playing them.
CUUPS last night had a very interesting class, Brooke did a class on bellydancing. We danced and drummed in the chapel, which had great acoustics for it. The drumming was good, though we had to stop just as I was starting to trance.
I'm going to recommend to the group that we do a lot more "celebratory" stuff like that. I think many of the "old guard" have gotten bored with how stodgy CUUPS has become. I have. Enough talk! We got plenty of that when our parents dragged us to church every Sunday. The prospect of a class on bellydancing was enough to draw back some people who had left for this reason (among others), and the announcement that there would be another drumming next Thursday was enough to make everyone cheer.
It also made me realize how much I need to add sacred celebration to my life. So much of my celebration and entertainment lately has been, um, secular.
