Something tells me Kinky Friedman's career in politics is pretty much over.

Earlier this month, Friedman referred to Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Houston, most of whom are black, as "crackheads and thugs." He later criticized ethnic politicking by saying, "I don't eat tamales in the barrio, I don't eat fried chicken in the ghetto and I don't eat bagels with the Jews."

Then a television interview from a year ago resurfaced in which Friedman was asked what to do about sexual predators. He said: "Throw them in prison and throw away the key and make them listen to a Negro talking to himself."

when I think of Friedman I think of
Don Imus who is his friend and whom I
do not like. I dont like Howard Stern
much either but in the Imus/Stern
brawls always favored Stern...who also
ran for governor of new york or something
didnt he? I have idea they are all sort
of Libertarian in politics(Friedman,Imus
and Stern...is this correct? dont follow
it closely)

In 1994, having never been a party activist, Stern declared for the Libertarian nomination for Governor of New York, campaigned for a few weeks, then abruptly dropped out of the race stating that he felt the income disclosure required of candidates to be too onerous and wanted to keep that information private.

He has had no further involvement with the Libertarian Party that I'm aware.

I didnt mean of the party, which Imus
and Friedman certainly are not, but
libertarian in the general sense as their
governing political idea.

It seems a good general rule of thumb that people who run for office as outsiders will tend to be libertarian. Anyone with authoritarian leanings will be drawn to the Dems or the GOP.

yeah I guess...or like jesse ventura,
the ross perot sort of populism etc.
of those, thinking of stern and
Imus, I liked stuttering john and
his ambush interviews which were kind
of amusing...

Some of that material was kind of accidentally brilliant... "bulldada" as the Church of the Subgenius folks called it. They zeroed in on the arrogance of "A-list" celebrity and hammered at the most sensitive nerves. For example, it was particularly funny to hear the responses when he'd ask someone very famous who they were.

yes. it is like il matto, the fool

or I suppose homey with his weighted

The sad thing is even with this Kinky is now basically just as bad as the others running... in Texas we don't have much in the way of good choices. But I am really sad to hear this, I hadn't heard him being racist before and he was my choice, Now, I dont' know who to vote for.

Wow, he sounds just like one of the Long brothers.
Maybe he should run for office in Louisiana.

Hehehe.

The sad thing is, i can almost appreciate what it is that he's saying about not wanting to be a superficial political suckup, but, ya gotta have more tact than that.

'S what reminded me of the Longs; Earl particularly. He once called one of his running mates a cocksucker (this is during a time, remember, when the phrase was taken WAY more literally than it is these days).
Kinky's going for the "I'm just like one of y'all" campaign; not that I lump myself in with that (lol), but it's a real smart platform.
Why are all of the crazies from Texas???
(Uh, at risk of you know, lumping large groups of people into generalized categories or something)
;}

I'd rather someone call an opponent a cocksucker then make racial slurs. I don't think they're in the same ballpark to be honest. ^^

I'd rather keep the insults out of politics, really. It's just a way to convince people not to listen to other half of an argument.

Asking him to apologize for a stupid remark made twenty-six years ago is just a bit much.

Regardless, the result of the collective weight of all this may be to cause some of the liberals and libertarians who have been laboring under the delusion that he would be representative of their interests to realize his true attitudes, causing them to shift back to the Democratic and Libertarian candidates.

I'm inclined to agree, if there's been 26 years of growth and introspection and evidence of maturing and all that.

I agree 100%.
The guy who won the Democratic senate nomination in Minneapolis had ties to Farrakan when he was in college, but the Flack Catchers (as in "Mau-Mauing The" ) didn't make a big deal about that.

What leads you to believe that a racist bigot can't win in Texas?

Date: 2006-09-22 11:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sophiaserpentia.livejournal.com
White people are actually a minority in Texas. A bigot might be able to do well in some parts of the state, like east Texas, but statewide office? I don't think so.

One of the things that helped Dubya win over Ann Richards was the fact that he spoke Spanish. He butchered the language just as much as he butchers English, but it helped even still.

Doesn't say much for the Spanish-speaking population though.

interestingly enough, Kinky was in the pride parade this past Sunday. he, a few minor political figures, and our lesbian sheriff. he could have just been pandering or it could have been genuine but in Texas, I give any politician who will ride down Cedar Springs Avenue in the pride parade quite a bit of credit. support for the gay community is lacking statewide, no matter what ethnicity.

Not as stupid as he seems in this case...

Actually you may be suprised to know that Kinky may be taking the time here to put his finger into the air and give voice to what the majority of Houstonians are thinking. It's been shown that the richer evacuees were the ones that got out first with cars, and were able to get away to places like Atlanta. These evacuees, for obvious socio-economic reasons, were able to easily move on with their lives. (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/hurricane/4196794.html) However, here in Houston we were given the brunt of the poorer evacuees, and for whatever combination of reasons, their condition has remained largely unchanged. Obviously, where there is poverty, crime is sure to follow. The problem is that Houstonians are unwilling to realize that these evacuees are for all intents and purposes probably going to stay here for the rest of their lives and continue to view them as guests. Guests that have overstayed their welcome. Which I suppose isn't too far of a stretch.... after all it was the federal government that bussed them here, what's keeping them from bussing them back? (Other then, well, the obvious fact that their neighborhoods do not exist anymore.)

Now as for Kinky himself, I personally feel he is just a Republican puppet, but that is another matter altogether.

I was pointing out a hypocrisy. Kinky is getting flack for using the word, but the UNCF has it right in their title. But because they're a black organization, it's OK. I just find that two-faced.

Given that he's running on a "straight shooter" image, I think this can only help him. It's un-PC, and it contains just enough of a grain of truth that it'll get people talking about it. If he made comments like this *all the time* it would hurt him, but one or two just helps sell that image to people who might be buying.
