NOW I'm missing entries and comments, discussions that took place on my journal recently that were important to me. This is, to me, far worse than the loss of my style info.

Notably, the discussion where several of you told me where to find archive tools is missing. That entry and all of the discussion is gone. I will have to beg you to please tell me again where to find those tools.

I'm afraid to look through my memories to see how many of my old entries might be mising.

LJ is offering people on Chef-sub-8 a month of free time. Big whoop -- what good is free paid time, when there's no guarantee that data will be retained?

LJ gets no more of my money, until I see sustained proof that stability issues like this have been fixed.

Edit. The "lost entry restoration tool" says this: "It seems that all of your entries are in order. If you are experiencing any difficulties with your account, please visit our support center."

No, they most certainly are NOT in order. This is totally unacceptable.

Edit. The LJ Backup tool does not work on this computer, for some reason. I suppose I'll try rebooting and seeing if that works.

I'd wait until tomorrow, because I'm literally sickened over my frustration with this, but I should try to do the backup while my entries are still here.

The also offered some procedure for recovering lost entries. I think I saw it in lj-mainetance. Don't give up, yet.

Yes, I tried that. I got an entry back, but still seem to be missing some, including an important and emotional entry I made.

I wasn't one of the original posters, but these may interest you: LiveJournal Backup Toolkit which can convert your entries to several other blog formats, LJBook which will export your journal to PDF, including the comments and ALJ which will download entries and comments to plain text files. This tool will allegedly restore lost entries. Good luck!

Does LJbook convert the whole journal to a single PDF? I have several hundred entries spanning two years and thousands of comments. I wouldn't care to have all of that in a single file.

Near as I can tell, it's one big file. This has interesting possibilities as far as splitting up PDFs- or extracting text.

ALJ doesn't ask for my password. Will it get my protected entries too?

You have to log in in Internet Explorer with persistent cookies first for that.

The same has been happening to myself and friends of mine, and I'm considering exporting my entries to movabletype and putting up a new blog on a personal domain.

At this point, what I am thinking is that I will use a different blog for important entries and just use LJ to keep up with a few friends.

Did any of the entries you lost have comments? If so, you *might* be able to reconstruct some from the comment notification emails? (If you have them turned on, that is.)

Even if you don't have it turned on, it's possible that some of the people who commented may have had the option turned on to have their own comments emailed to them. Might be worth asking.

I turned email notification off a long time ago, because at the peak of my LJ use I was getting many dozens of comments a day.

I haven't had problems with lost entries ... but increasingly I'm seeing a tendency to ignore the right to privacy of LJ users if the results would be "cool."

I'm getting heartily sick of seeing friends-only entries pop up unprotected in the "20 Most Recent Posts" list and the "Pictures Recently Posted to LJ" sites. I'm starting to wonder if anything I post here is secure or safe in any way.

I may need to move my blog to another provider, or to a private server. Really, LJ doesn't save me THAT much time over templated HTML ...

What's the 20 Most Recent Posts list? I hadn't heard of that one. Ow....

The 'latest posts' document, here (http://www.livejournal.com/stats/latest.bml). I'm not sure it's actually 20.

This is an LJ-run page. It doesn't show filtered or private posts.

It doesn't show private posts, no. But there have been consistent faults where posts marked friends-only appeared there in full text. (You can find such errors by attempting to view the original post.)

If it happens even once, that's too often.
