Seeing the Valentine's Day stuff in the supermarket has reminded me that I don't know how to act anymore when I'm around Dee. I don't want to be stand-offish, it doesn't feel right, but at the same time, if I act too familiar, I'm afraid of sending her the wrong message. So I've been erring on the side of being kind of stilted and awkward around her.

The problem with the hooptie has resurfaced, which means I can go ahead and put another air filter in there and maybe get a few more days of driving out of it, but whatever is causing the air filter to clog up so badly is just going to continue to get worse.

Actually I'm thinking I might put some money into a bike instead. The only thing preventing me from doing so is the cold we've been having. A bike ride from the apartment to the place in town where I'd catch the Airline bus wouldn't be too bad; New Orleans is all level ground so there are no huge hills to worry about; that bus has a bike rack on it, and I still have the bike-rack-card I got from JeT when living in Jefferson Parish. Plus this would force me to be more active, which wouldn't be altogether so horrible. This solution might be troublesome come summer, (even the mornings would be almost too warm for a bike ride in July and August, without a shower at work) but I'd live.

If you treat Dee with love and respect, and she somehow gets a wrong message, lovingly and respectfully clarify your intentions. Of course, I'm just a dumb kid with a bad track record on the romance thing, so what do I know? ;) Best wishes anyway. wrt to transportation troubles: Live near your work! Then you can walk, ride, or take the bus as you please. Also, most cities have at least a few uber-cheap neighborhoods. Mine has lots. You could also agitate for a bike-friendly workplace, which would mean showers and changing rooms. Or you could look for a job with a company that's already bike-friendly. Or learn to fix your car. It's easy! Unless it's newish, in which case it'll have a lot of proprietary parts, and special tools and whatnot.

Generally any car after, say, 1990, I don't really feel comfortable tinkering under the hood except maybe to change spark plugs and hoses and stuff like that. The hooptie is a 1990, which makes it borderline.

Looking for a different employer would essentially mean changing careers for me at this point. Not to many employers in NOLA who need someone with 6 years of experience as an Authorware programmer. Most of those jobs are (I cringe to say it) to be found in the NE, especially in the Washington-NYC-Boston corridor.

I contemplated finding a place close to work; apartments out in west Metairie or Kenner are fairly cheap... but I found when I left uptown New Orleans that I really missed living in the part of the city that has character and history.

There is an aweful lot of rainy days down here. Are you supposed to look professional at work? Or just do your job?

That's a good point. A poncho with a change of clothes, a towel, and a waterproof backpack? If the hooptie runs semi-well, I could use that on rainy days, too.
