President Bush said Iraq has become the "central front" in the war on terror.

I realized with a chill what he really meant. Terrorists and other shady characters from all over the Middle East are converging on Iraq to take pot shots at the troops, relief aid workers, UN workers, and Halliburton contractors.

They're converging on Iraq. Which specifically means they are not coming to US home soil. While al-Qaida will continue to attack Americans, it will be Iraqi civilians who shed blood, who have to clean up after every car bomb. Not Americans.

It amazes me that it didn't occur to me earlier, that this (among other things of course) must have been what the neocons intended all along when they planned the invasion of Iraq just hours after the Sept. 11 attacks.

It is the perogative of Empire to choose the battlefield... and this battlefield always winds up being outside the homeland.

Don't forget, it also provides the perfect place to send all those useless young people with no jobs!

He's making noises about Iran too (shudder)

I read a brief comment in an op-ed piece the other day about Iran colluding with North Korea to obtain information and materials needed to develop nuclear weapons.

Right, that would be North Korea, the super-paranoid, intensely isolationist dictatorship, selling nuclear information to an Islamist theocracy.

You know... I believe it! (But like my mentor Jake Stratton-Kent, I try to believe at least five impossible things every day before breakfast.)

The only thing which makes that possibly believeable to me is that GW openly lists them together as the axis of evil which he is going after next, so maybe they decided to band together for protection... in which case its GW's fault anyway.

Yep, I was just saying this to Soren about a week ago. It seems to me that Pres. Bush went after Iraq for spurious reasons and now all the troops have been extended "indefinately" because it's very much to Bush's benefit to have them there. They're lightning rods. Why would a terrorist trek all the way to the US to take out an American when he can just glide into Iraq and do it?
That way Bush can run up an election year that since 9-11 there haven't been any attacks on American soil and looky looky what a good job the Homeland Security Stazi are doing. Aren't you safe with him at the helm? Wouldn't you be worried more if the Democrats came in, because then Something Could Happen. And pay no attention to the fact that on average two Americans are killed every day in Iraq. Those are the guys who -signed up- to be shot at in your stead, so you could feel secure at the Denny's in your hometown.
If you're an evil man with no ethics, this makes a horrible kind of sense.

There is something utterly paranoid about this whole idea, and very disturbing. And god help me, I can see a twisted kind of logic in your words.

Am I that cynical?
