I have a whole afternoon to myself.

I'm sitting here on the computer, watching snow fall, and feeling guilty because I'm not working on one of several projects I've been thinking about lately.

For one thing, there's the actuary exam coming up in May that I've been planning to take, and I have a lot of preparation to do for it. I have the time, I could be working on that now.

There's this idea I've been tossing around for a couple of months now, about organizing my thoughts and writing a collection of essays on social issues and politics, organized around the Green Party's "ten key points."

Then I've also been thinking that I owe it to the world and to others like me to write down some of my thoughts and experiences as a transsexual. The working title for this project is "You Cannot Possibly Imagine," because I realized one day that "cis-gendered" people really can't possibly imagine what it is like to be transgendered, the kinds of things we experience, the ways we have to question things others take for granted.

I have so much to do, how dare I waste a day doing nothing?

The problem is that I am a Generation-Xer. Everyone I've known who is close to my age feels like there is some grand project that they're meant to be working on. Usually this is something that involves writing, or music, or film, or sculpture, or something. That, or its some big career move that they feel they ought to spend their time and effort on.

[livejournal.com profile] secret_willow just came in to ask me for my assistance in hanging some speakers in the new living room so that we can have surround-sound. This sounds like an excellent diversion from my angst -- it will save me from the drive to do something meaningful.

Note: Wikipedia's article, linked above, cites 1961-1981 as the years of Generation X. I protest: Gen-X birthdates span from 1964 to 1975. Otherwise, it's a worthwhile article.
