That one in the top corner is a new feature, which they haven't finished (supposedly it was coming online last night).
You should be able to update your count here:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/154007/edit/novel_info
It put in your User ID - but if that doesn't work, on the main "My NaNoWriMo" screen, go down to edit Novel Info.
Technically I'm no overly impressed with the site, but then it's had a lot of downtime. Hopefully it won't distract from the writing though :)
