Oh. I got the 'perches' and 'flightings' things from John J. MacDermott, a scholar of William James, who's rather good on the point of making meaning out of chaos, and of the conditionality of knowledge.
The best MacDermott I could find online was which is typically like him but horribly punctuated due to some kinda HTML screwup. It's still worth reading.
