I don't buy it. The affluence and bounty of modern American society is largely the result of economic neo-colonialism. Worldwide: the poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer. From the perspective of people in the United States, things are great! But that's because we've been sucking in resources from the rest of the world. We have a trade deficit that we are paying off with money we're borrowing from Japan and China. This pattern is not sustainable.
