A jury here in Louisiana has just sentenced a man to death for the rape of an eight-year-old girl.
I am not comforted by the knowledge of the heroin-related death of the relative who raped me when I was 10. I doubt this girl will be helped in her healing by seeing her stepfather executed, or languishing on death row. If anything, it will teach her that the appropriate response to violence is hatred and more violence.
Vengeance doesn't heal. Only forgiveness heals.
