Well, I am standing at the 15 minute terminal at the Austin Public Library, so I'll just keep this short for now.

Yesterday was good. Lounged around during the day, then dolled up for the poly dinner. Met a few people I've seen around here on LJ and whom I will perhaps encounter again. I had a chance to meet [livejournal.com profile] ubiquity's sweetie [livejournal.com profile] erinlefey, who is a dear.

There I met [livejournal.com profile] elphie, who made a special trip out to the poly dinner to find me (I'm flattered!) We headed off in search of margaritas, which we presumed wouldn't be terribly difficult to find in Austin.

The first place had a wait -- we didn't want to wait. So we went to Taco Cabana -- where I was carded, and then refused a 'rita because I had an out of state ID. (Ooh! That would NEVER work in a city like New Orleans.)

First time I've ever been refused alcohol. I'm 33 years old.

The next two places were getting ready to close -- so we considered it a sign from the divine that 'ritas weren't our destiny and we headed for the Dog and Duck Pub instead. There we had a nice chat.

Broke fast this morning with [livejournal.com profile] erinlefey, and had a short adventure involving dead batteries and jumper cables.

Well, now to make my way back out into the city. But not before induling in some more geeky reminiscing here at the library. This place is smaller than I remember (of course); how many 13-year-old geeklings do YOU know who would be willing to walk a mile to the closest bus stop and ride downtown just to be around books? This was one of my favorite haunts as a kid.

So, here at the library I found a translation of the Odes of Solomon I have not previously examined, that of James H. Charlesworth. His slant appears to downplay the considerable influence of Gnosticism upon the Odes in favor of a more orthodox Jewish influence.

Just upon examination of one Ode, Ode 8, I noted a few Gnostic motifs that Charlesworth was either unaware of, or chose to omit.

It occurs to me, while working with all of this material, that this is what I am called to do. I have known this for some time; but it strikes me very keenly that I need to find a way to dedicate as much time and energy to this as possible. I had shrugged off the idea of returning to school; and this still does not seem a particularly viable option; but I may literally have no choice but to seek a way to return to school and study this in a scholarly way.

At least, that is the feeling that strikes me today.

Today has been spent largely here at the library. I went for a while to the Drag, and caught some lunch there, then phoned [livejournal.com profile] aethyrflux in hopes of linking up at some point before the party Saturday night. Have added to my library a copy of those Odes of Solomon not available at The Gnosis Library.

Something occupying my thoughts today is how much nicer a place Austin would be to live than New Orleans. The truth is that I love *being in* New Orleans -- I love my friends and adore my sweeties and don't want to trade them for anything -- but I do not enjoy being a *resident* of the city. Anyone who has lived there should understand the distinction I am making without me having to elaborate further. As a place to live, Austin has so much more to offer.

I am still not planning to leave New Orleans, though. I know, however, where I would come if I do.

[livejournal.com profile] ubiquity and I are going to meet up in a little while. She wants to play Dance Dance Revolution, although it is much more likely that I will be watching her show off.
