July 4th wasn't decadent, but it was pleasant. At nine I took the St. Charles streetcar (to avoid parking in the Quarter) and sat back with the breeze flowing through my hair, watching the last of the city's fireworks from the streetcar. I met with friends in Jackson Square at 11 and from there went to Mythique, which just opened on Decatur Street. Great atmosphere; Kael's description of it ("decorated like an opium den") was pretty accurate. It has a very mellow atmosphere, cushions on the floor, board games and tables off to the side. And cheap drinks! We lingered there for several hours and chatted. At four we sauntered down to Angeli for early morning food and sauntered back to the streetcar.

In the last week or so I've seen Minority Report and Men In Black II. The latter is entertaining and forgettable; Minority Report though is haunting and thought-provoking. It is good to see a director make such a strong statement about governmental invasion of privacy, given the current political climate. A new poll says people are willing to give up constitutional freedoms for security. Egads! If this nation allows momentary panic over terrorism to roll back civil liberties it will be a long, hard fight to get them back. How easily people forget history.
