Why do I even bother to look in [livejournal.com profile] christianity anymore? Half of what I see there literally makes me sick.

Edit. What disturbs me this morning in particular are (a) ignorant comments about homosexuality which never fails to upset me, and (b) willful ignorance regarding anti-Semitism.

For example, it's being discussed that Gibson has taken a scene out of his movie that shows a Jew lamenting that Jesus' blood will be on their heads forever. Comments such as, "But that's in the Bible, so it's historically true and COULDN'T POSSIBLY be anti-Semitic" are what has riled me.

What makes you sick about what's in [livejournal.com profile] christianity?

I updated this entry with some detail on what it is that has me upset.

Re:

[identity profile] yahvah.livejournal.com 2004-02-05 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
a) there's little you can do about that but move on with your life.

b) I think that it's well-established that there's no anti-Semitic content in the New Testament, just ignorant interpretation of the New Testament.

I know you want to hit that

[identity profile] belisariuss.livejournal.com 2004-02-05 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
is it possible

this thred is confusing anti-judaism
with anti-semitism?

just curious

from everything I have read
anti-semitism found it's first usage
in 16th century spain
after the reconquista

to call parts of the new testament anti-semitic
seems like an extreme anachronism

this doesn't mean
that individuals can't use parts of the new testament
to justify
their feelings of antisemitism

it just means
that I find it hard to believe
someone could argue that the new testament
had antisemitic sections to it

Constantine

check ya

Methinks you need more high quality masochism in the bedroom so you don't need to subject yourself to painful LJ posts.

No Fundos for me!

I don't go there: don't like to get my dander up so much, I guess.

Every once in a while there's some good discussion. But for the most part, it's just too upsetting for me.

[identity profile] archanglrobriel.livejournal.com 2004-02-05 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
And people wonder why I refuse to go to any sort of church, even though technically the denomination my parents now attend has a kind of "don't ask, don't tell" policy in place for it's gay members. Gosh can ya FEEL the LOVE of Christ in that room? Nevermind that Christians in the modern epoch are doing any number of things that are claimed as an abomination in the Old Testament, or that Christ came to tell everybody that the old codes weren't all that anymore. Or that Paul had major unresolved personal issues on the subject and that most modern somewhat self aware Christians tend to dismiss most of the Pauline texts as political rather than spiritual...

My personal favorite was the woman who claimed she had an "intimate knowledge of the issue (homosexuality) so nobody start calling me a bigamist."

(laughs out loud)
Oh my. That's just lovely. When 8th graders (or adults with that level of edu-ma-cation) attack!

I only have ONE prejudice: Conta-Protestantism!

[identity profile] publius-aelius.livejournal.com 2004-02-05 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think the greatest of the Protestant poets in the English literary tradition is Milton. The Prots who are literary and well-educated salivate over him, and claim he's a greater poet than Dante (which he clearly is NOT), but when you have one of these "born-againers" in a Milton course you will notice that they NEVER bring up the fact that Milton wouldn' darken the doorstep of a "Christian" church during the whole second half of his life. And ALL of his angle on "Christian" religiosity seems to be that one should sit alone with one's Bible, and try to figure it out for oneself. Of course, considering the amount of bile and hatred these people are spewing all the time, maybe sitting alone quietly with their Bibles might actually CONCENTRATE the venom.

Apparently there are a few people out there who chose to experiment with it, and chose to conclude that it wasn't for them.

That gives them the right to declare that it must be a choice for everyone.

Never mind the flaws in inductive "reasoning" involved.

Try [livejournal.com profile] politicsforum; or I may enjoy discussing those issues. I haven't found any of the religous/political ideology-specific communities to be particularly amenable to nonpartisan discussion.

I left the community for those reasons, among others. It's a crying shame how ignorant so many Christians are. And I say that as one who is aware of my own ignorance, but I'm constantly trying to learn and become more aware and more educated.

The attitude displayed by most evangelical/fundamentalist Christians makes me wish we had different "labels" -- one to denote that type of ignorant, intolerant, oppressive "Christianity" and one that references people who really are trying to follow Christ.

you're scraping the bottom of the barrell in that room. seriously. as my father said before he died, "don't associate with subhuman ghouls." so i don't. it's not worth my time.

I can't seem to get through a full page of those entires without getting pissed off by something. There doesn't seem to be much diversity of thought in there. And no one seems willing to discuss social justice issues as applied to the faith, which never fails to baffle and disturb me.

I'm queer--and I STILL love it!

Some of the comments I and others are referring to are buried within the responses made to posts... IMO it's not really worth digging for them.

Yes, you may add me, I will add you back.

When I was a Christian (a long time ago) I thought that God a\was being grossly unfair by punishing *me* with original sin comitted by Adam & Eve. However, given that mindset, why would that same God NOT punish Jews for all eternity for killing his kid? Seems to me that Christianity is *inherantly* anti-semitic as well as just plain fucked-up with regards their own free wills. IMO, if there is an "original sin" it is in not throwing away Christianity as soon as one is old enough to do so.

Re:

[identity profile] anosognosia.livejournal.com 2004-02-05 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a shame that no one explained to you that Original Sin is an existential description of the fundamental alienation necessary to the human condition, and is not a punishment for anything.

So why do you go there? To read things that tell you that you're a sinner? So you can feel bad abut yourself?
I'm sorry, but the vast majority of Christian thought is focused around the idea that people are inherently bad, that the things most people want to do in order to enjoy life are bad, and that one must grovel before a heavenly "Father" in order to be spared eternal torment. This is a hard thing to say to you because I can see you desperately want to find a way to end the conflict you are feeling, but the reality of the matter is, the vast majority of Christians will never accept YOU PERSONALLY as a Christina or even as a decent human being UNLESS you give up: all extra-marital sex; all cross-dressing or gender bending behavior; cut your hair; start going to some mainstrwam church on a regular basis and regularly throw the phrase "Praise God" into your conversations; and tell the vast majority of your friends they are going to hell for their evil ways unless they do the same.

You are Oh So Wrong, my dear! The greatest "Christian" saints were weirdos who wanted to spend ALL their time with such people. Indeed, Jesus was a "weirdo" who RELISHED the company of the impious!
