Judge Says Calif. Can't Ban Gay Marriage

Okay, but I'm going to look at the dark cloud around this silver lining, because

A pair of bills pending before the California Legislature would put a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the November ballot. If California voters approve such an amendment, as those in 13 other states did last year, that would put the issue out of the control of lawmakers and the courts.

Hey, while you're at it, it's not too late to add amendments to your state constitution making interracial marriage illegal too. Because the majority ALWAYS votes in the best interests of the minority, even when the minority doesn't know what's good for themselves.

After all, this is a kind of marriage of which Christian leaders and politicans said (among many nasty things):

  • it's wrong "simply because natural instinct revolts at it as wrong."

  • it would result in "a degraded and ignoble population incapable of moral and intellectual development."

  • it is "abominable" and would "pollute" America if allowed.

  • it must be banned to prevent "traditional marriage from being contaminated by the recognition of relationships that are physically and mentally inferior," and entered into by "the dregs of society.

It is true that it isn't over yet. But every tiny baby step we make in the right direction cheers me :)

Which is why we have to keep doing the work we are doing to combat that. :*

I'm only getting warmed up. :)

Well I really dig what the judge wrote: "It appears that no rational purpose exists for limiting marriage in this state to opposite-sex partners."

She's absolutely right -- no rational reason exists. The reasons given are all entirely irrational. Unfortunately, the Christian memes play on people's fears, which tend to overrule reason all too often.

it must be banned to prevent "traditional marriage from being contaminated by the recognition of relationships that are physically and mentally inferior," and entered into by "the dregs of society.

Does that include Mrs. Brittany Spears and Mr. Kevin "I don't need no stinkin' job" Federline? Cuz if anyone represents the dregs of society and the mentally inferior, I think they win hands down.

I was (naively) shocked at all the anti-gay measures that passed in the last election. Where is all the hate and fear coming from? Seriously, it blindsided me. Anyway, defintely more cloud than lining everywhere you look these days, but I attended a gay wedding at my Meetinghouse last year and it was such a joy to sign the book that day.

Reasons

What always cracks me up are the reasons people give for not allowing gay marriage. like the hetrosexual community is some great holder of moral fabric. i know more gay couples that have been together 10+ years then i do hetro couples. and then there is the whole issue with childern. "you cant let "the gays" (cause that is what some people call them) raise kids, they will abuse them". arent most sexual abusers hetro males? now there is the whole nurture (sp?) vs nature thing, but i think it is a nature thing.

i have an issue with the people that say "dont let them get married, it is wrong". but worse then that are the people that say "well it is ok to let them have a union just not married." if you get the same rights then why not let people be married and not joined in union. pick a side.

i say let if people want to get married and they are adults, let them. and if you find someone/s that make you happy god bless you. you have found a real treasure.

sorry for the rant. this is one subject that kind of ticks me off.
