An elevator to space. Possibly a reality within 15 years:

Space Elevator: High Hopes, Lofty Goals

I first read about the elevator idea in ANALOG magazine about 40 years ago. I do wish there was a way to keep governments out of the project & forbid military payloads.

Cool, I didn't realize that Clarke's vision was so specific. He was the one who suggested a belt of geosynchronous communications satellites, too, wasn't he? (Or was that Heinlein?)

Great, so the terrorists would have a several-mile-long razor blade they could knock over on top of stuff. Reassuring. ;->

Yes, me too, but the only way I see anything like that happening is the worldwide adoption of anarcho-syndicalism. Which I don't see happening in our lifetimes (and I'm not sure I'd promote such an idea) barring major economic collapse.

The others have intelligent comments.

All I can think about is Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
