What good is tradition? I mean this sincerely. What good is it? What do we get from it that we can't get from other sources... or better yet, figure out for ourselves?

I'm using a Dali icon because he said something which sticks with me: "Art which does not stem from tradition is plagiarism." Is this profound, or is it just the last defense of an old order in the face of something new?
