Interesting. No, I hadn't heard of that, but I'm not surprised that the spread of the printing press opened the flood gates, especially before there was a sense of what is worthwhile to publish. There was a similar kind of prosaic "anything goes" when the world wide web first opened up too. You can still find relics from those days from time to time if you search strange topics (as I do). It's all the more surprising that something like this was preserved from antiquity, when some scribe had to take the time to copy it, bind it, preserve it, etc.
