You know, when I was growing up, the difference between the US and the Soviet Union was summarized with a two-word phrase: "papers, please." Now that's the law in Arizona. Law enforcement groups actually hate the law.

Meanwhile Oklahoma passed a law that requires probe-rape for pregnant women who want an abortion. Yes, when someone inserts an object into an orifice of your body without your permission, that is rape.

But, hey, the Republicans also say they want less government.

The article doesn't indicate the ultrasound has to be the probe variety. Where are you finding that info? A standard transabdominal ultrasound is strictly external, and not uncommon both before and after for docs to insure the procedure is (a) warranted (verification of pregnancy) and (b) successful.

Hrm.

Personally it wouldn't bother me because realistically, if I'm asking for an abortion, I prefer the D&C option, in which case a vaginal ultrasound is the least of the probing. But for those who prefer the induced miscarriage version, I can see where this would be highly objectionable.

Even if there were a medical justification for this, it should be a decision made by a woman and her doctor, not a procedure -- and a cost, and a hassle -- imposed on her by legislators for pretty much the sole purpose of erecting legal barriers of access to something which is her constitutional right.

New development -- the bill was vetoed, though it passed by a veto-proof margin so it will likely be back.

What they mean is they want less government for straight white guys, particularly rich ones (the bastard child of social and fiscal conservatism). Unless the government can be used to make said guys even richer, of course (the bastard child of fiscal and neo-conservatism).

I think the phrase some Repubs have actually used is a "leaner and meaner" government. This and the Arizona identity law both sound like they fit the "meaner" part of the equation.
