A girl dies of anorexia and what does the mass media do? Pick a famous woman and blame her! Voila, now she will be scrutinized instead, no more scrutiny on any role the mass media might possibly play in spreading the eating disorder epidemic.

I agree that in the photo shown, Ms. Knightly appears to be unhealthily thin. I see that picture and worry for her.

But i also object to the mindset that places the primary (or sole) focus for this problem on thin female celebrities. Advertisers and media outlets and the diet industry are making billions of dollars every year, and their profit margins depend largely on women having low self-esteem.

Indeed. Those beauty product ads with the "simulated result" photos come up frequently on Yahoo pages. And the experienced eye can easily tell that all they did was Photoshop the pictures.

the Daily Mail should not be taken as representative of any "news" media. it's a tabloid on the same level as our National Enquirer. the only reason the Daily Mail pulled this dumbass idea was to generate the lawsuit — the increase in ad revenue will more than offset the cost of the suit.
