But through stifling it. Is that really the solution we want to pursue?
Sometimes when a person has been hurt enough they just want it to stop. It makes one weary to get beer bottles thrown at one just for holding hands with ones date. Or get threatened with rape from the passenger in a passing vehicle while hugging the one you love (and in a manner that is consider respectable even in public - if you know, opposite genders were involved). And I've had much milder experiences than most of my friends with similar orientations.
You say that anti discrimination laws make you uneasy. Then what do you suggest. That those who are targeted as victims of violent crime in large percentages just sit back and take it. Because that is the effect of not have anti discrimination laws. Say someone gets beaten for being gay. If they seek legal justice, chances are that will be brought up. If not by the victim, then by the police or by the attacker as part of thier defense. Seeking justice means risking getting outed. Getting outed - without protections in the world as it is - could mean losing jobs, apartments, the support of family memebers.
When things are set up so that hiding and lying are the best assurances of safety, where legally protecting yourself from violence means risking huge chunks of your everyday life - yeah, it is a compromise. It is that compromise that many refer to as self-defense.
