I'm pretty sure i remember a direct quote from a prosecutor saying they have no intention to go after people speaking in church.

I forgot that it wasn't prosecution, it was intimidation by police using the law as the stick.

Just what you say, when we use an authoritarian solution in an ideological conflict that previously had the authoritarian force behind it, the only thing that changes is who is put down/persecuted/discriminated against/oppressed/etc.

It changes the culture.

But through stifling it. Is that really the solution we want to pursue? It does not change people's hearts, it just uses fear to keep them in line which in turn drives their prejudices underground where they fester and grow until it explodes in a backlash. There is no compassion, only chains.
