Actually, i've seen evidence that laws against hate crimes and hate speech have significantly dampened sexist, racist, and homophobic offenses in the areas where they've been enacted. It changes the culture.
If you want to promote your views on homosexuality to people like me in a respectful way, the only way it will reach people like me and be effective is if i do not feel threatened when i hear it. That will only happen when the culture around us is no longer discriminatory.
